Black pottery is a clay product fired in an outdoor kiln in a reducing atmosphere. Archaeologists find ceramic works fired with this technique in various countries of the world, which suggests that this technique was very important in a certain period, connecting different cultures. In Lithuania, this archaic way of burning has been preserved to this day. After burning with the black ceramic technique, the product becomes impermeable to water and acquires a metallic black surface. The products burned in the outdoor furnace reach a temperature of 800-1000 C°, later, using pine wood, the works are reduced and blackened.
The Black Ceramics Center offers classes for people of all ages in an open ceramic workshop-gallery. In our workshop, the visitor will find a wide range of unique black ceramic products, from sculptural compositions to functional and original collections of dishes.
